How We Test AI Companion Apps

Anyone can list a few apps and slap star ratings on them. We do something harder: we actually use these apps, for weeks, before we tell you what we think. This page explains exactly how we reach every verdict on CompanionVerdict — so you can judge whether our judgment is worth trusting.

We use each app for real

Every app we review is one we’ve signed up for, paid for where needed, and used over an extended period — not for five minutes, but across days and weeks. AI companions reveal themselves over time: the conversation that feels magical on day one can fall apart by day ten when the app forgets who you are. That’s the kind of thing you only catch by sticking with it.

What we evaluate

We score every app across the same core criteria, so our comparisons are fair and consistent:

  • Conversation quality. Does it feel natural and responsive, or scripted and repetitive? Can it hold a thread, show personality, and surprise you?
  • Memory. Does the companion remember your past conversations, your preferences, and the details that make an ongoing relationship feel real — or does it reset?
  • Customization. How much control do you have over your companion’s personality, appearance, voice, and behavior?
  • Features. Voice calls, images, group chats, roleplay tools — what’s actually on offer, and does it work well?
  • Safety & privacy. How does the app handle your data? What are its age policies and content controls? Apps with weak safeguards are flagged or excluded.
  • Value for money. We weigh the price against what you really get, and we’re honest about which paid tiers are worth it and which aren’t.

How we score

Each app receives a rating based on the criteria above. A high score means an app performed well where it matters most — not that it paid for the privilege. We weight the criteria toward what actually shapes the day-to-day experience, so memory and conversation quality carry more weight than a long feature list that looks good on paper.

When two apps are close, we tell you what separates them and who each one is best for, rather than pretending there’s a single winner for everyone.

We stay independent

This is the part that matters most. CompanionVerdict earns money through affiliate commissions when readers sign up to apps through our links. But no app can pay us for a better ranking, a higher score, or a kinder review. We recommend the same apps whether or not they have an affiliate program, and when an app has real weaknesses, we say so plainly. You can read the full details on our affiliate disclosure page.

We keep our reviews up to date

These apps change constantly — new features arrive, prices shift, policies tighten, and quality can rise or fall overnight. We revisit our reviews and rankings regularly and update them when things change, so the advice you read reflects the app as it is today, not as it was a year ago.

A note on scope

CompanionVerdict covers AI companion, roleplay, and creative storytelling apps for adults (18+). We focus on mainstream companion experiences and do not feature explicit adult content or anything involving minors. Our goal is to help adults make informed, confident choices in a fast-moving space.
